Sarah Dessen was born on June 6th, 1970 in Evanston, Illinois, but she spent most of her life in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. She has always had a love of reading and writing. When she was eight, her parents gave her an old manual typewriter and a desk so she could start writing down her stories, and it became a passion. Both of her parents were professors at the University of North Carolina, where she later graduated with a degree in English and high honors in creative writing. After college, Dessen decided to continue with her job as a waitress at the Flying Burrito restaurant while working on her first novel, That Summer. The book was released three years after she graduated college. Since then, Dessen has written 8 novels. She is now teaching and living in North Carolina with her husband and daughter Sasha, as well as two dogs. She says of her job,“Teaching is great for me, because I get to show people how writing can really change the way you see not only yourself but the world.”
